A raging fever can change a person’s relationship to food and drink (and reality). I spent all of this past Saturday sleeping and otherwise trying not to move for fear of alerting the painful attack dogs posted throughout my skull. My whole body ached in a way it hasn’t for several years. To cope, I drank bottles of VitaminWater but couldn’t eat more than a cup of broth with noodles all day. Nothing can describe those fever-induced delusions and complex imaginary puzzles which worked through my mind. The worst was over by Sunday, but today I can still only drink water and sip soup. Also, my office is cold.
