Ever since I read a review in The New Yorker of A History Of The World In Six Glasses by Tom Standage, I’ve been rediscovering the social life of beverages. Too many people overindulge in their drink(s) of choice and can miss the cultural roles these beverages — beer, wine, distilled spirits, coffee, tea, and soda — have played throughout history. So much so, they may fail to enjoy their various tastes, unique smells and other qualities. I realized I have known people who have even based their very identity on what, where and with whom they drink. I can’t imagine drinking cup upon cup of coffee or bottle after bottle of beer as many do. Talk about filling a void: “One more round!” These days, I think it’s nice to enjoy a cup of expresso after lunch, tea while reading or a bottle of wine over dinner with friends. I’ve found saying “goodbye excess” can lead to a fuller appreciation of each glass.

Okay, I’ll admit it’s kinda fun to see one of my design campaigns displayed throughout town on posters, table tents, ads, tickets and banners. In my career, I’ve done numerous billboards, t-shirts, brochures, logos, business cards, letterheads, catalogs, newsletters, publications (and on and on), but who needs a gallery when there’s The City? But seriously, this year’s event was better organized and even more enjoyable than last year.

Homemade key lime pieAh, another weekend, another homemade pie! Last weekend Emma and I made a fresh peach pie from scratch, which was a hit at a dinner party later that night. This weekend, we tried our hand at a key lime pie with graham cracker crust. Fun! Fresh! Delicious!

While shopping for a few baking supplies, I realized that the local Meijer has remodeled itself into a Wal-Mart clone right under our noses! The aisles seem awkward, the brands cheaper, the employees grumpier and the clientele trashier. Red, white and blue seems to have supplanted their former yellow, orange and red color scheme, and even the endcap signs have that discount, ‘rolling back the prices’ ugliness. Horror! Silly me, I thought they’d be smart and emulate Target.

Sunday, we enjoyed the cool breeze, warm water and bright sunshine of the beach before discovering some quaint cuisine at a NE Indiana lakefront eatery. Times change, but some places retain their charm. Last night: pie for dessert. This morning: pie (and cereal) for breakfast.

BedtronicaNote to selves: if you ever have trouble loading basic applications in Mac OS X such as System Preferences, TextEdit, new program installers or even performing simple operations such as opening and saving documents, try removing any third party fonts (especially those really, really old ones). Sometimes, that’s all it takes to return your Mac to a healthy, good-natured state. In the words of a young kid I recently overheard at the library saying into his mobile phone, “Tight!”
