As a rule, I don’t blog about work. But, for those who haven’t heard already, I started a new job this week. I am now the Marketing Specialist in the Creative Services department at Indiana Tech. I was more-than-ready to leave my previous position, because I didn’t like the direction my employers are headed with their company. Plus, I was getting burned-out on being a one-man web development machine. The last two weeks were spent gathering my files and documenting my procedures so that they could carry on without me. Going forward, I can again focus on design and marketing communications. It’s been an adjustment to go from working alone in a small building in the suburbs to a large campus that’s near downtown and filled with students, staff and faculty. I’ve been a bit ‘homesick’ for my old routine and my old lunch haunts, but leaving it behind has been long overdue. Here’s to making changes…
A business isn’t just the products you have on the shelves in your store. It’s also the processes you have in place to run your operation. It’s also the relationships you create with your customers by the service you provide. You have to take ownership of all of these things when you create a new business. You can’t just assign all these things to someone else and not expect to have to make decisions and commitment. You can’t just get these things out of the way so that you can have a business. You must do all these things to BE a business.
